Frequently asked questions
Choose a topic below. For safety decisions, always follow official warnings and instructions from local emergency management.
Getting started
What is Mammatus Weather?
A weather app that combines forecasts, official hazard guidance, radar, satellite imagery, tropical tools, forecast models, and export workflows in one interface.
What are the main tabs?
Weather summarizes the forecast. Radar hosts radar and satellite maps. Outlooks collects official guidance. Tropics follows tropical systems. Models displays numerical forecasts. Settings controls playback, layers, appearance, sync, and support.
Where do forecasts and alerts come from?
U.S. forecasts and alerts are supplied by the National Weather Service. Other official agencies provide outlooks, tropical guidance, international warnings, and observations. Mammatus may process or deliver some products without changing their upstream ownership. See the Data Sources page for more information.
How do I refresh the Weather page?
Use the refresh button at the top of Weather. If a card still looks stale, verify connectivity and try again; upstream agencies can occasionally delay a product.
How do I choose a location?
Use location search or the app’s location controls. Forecast cards and official guidance update for the active location; map pages can be moved independently for exploration.
Why is a forecast card different from a nearby map label?
They may come from different observation times, stations, or forecast grids. The detail view and valid time are the best references when values differ.
Can I replay the introductory tour?
Yes. Open Settings, then Data & Support, and choose Replay App Tour. The tour covers the current weather, map, outlook, tropical, model, and sharing workflows.
Does Mammatus replace official warnings?
No. Mammatus is an informational display. Always follow official warnings, evacuation orders, and instructions from local emergency management.
Radar and 3D
What is the difference between single-site radar and MRMS?
Single-site products come from one radar and preserve local radar detail. MRMS combines many observations into national products such as Composite Reflectivity QC and precipitation estimates.
What do the radar-site colors mean?
Green means the site reports current data, red means confirmed stale data, and gray means the latest data time is unavailable. International sites use their own map treatment. Status can change as agency metadata refreshes.
Why does a stale site show an FTM message?
The app requests the latest NWS Free Text Message for that radar using its three-letter location code. An FTM can describe maintenance or an outage; no recent FTM does not prove that a site is operational.
What is the radar sweep?
It is a visual playback effect, not new radar data. It appears only for the selected single-site radar, stays within 250 km of that site, and is hidden when the viewport is outside its coverage.
What radar access is included with Free?
Free includes five-frame radar animation, the lowest Level II tilt, lightning and surface-observation overlays, and a single map layout.
What does Pro add to radar?
Pro adds longer radar loops, selectable Level II elevations, dual and quad map layouts, storm tracks, native 3D radar, and custom color tables.
How does native 3D radar work?
Choose a supported U.S. NEXRAD site and open 3D. The view centers on the selected site’s coordinates and requests its available Mammatus radar-volume artifact. Processing or network delay can affect first load.
Why might a radar frame be missing?
A source scan may be late, unavailable, or still downloading. The app favors usable frames and retains the last successful display where supported instead of blanking the map.
Satellite and lightning
Which satellites are available?
The dynamic catalog can provide GOES East, GOES West, and Himawari products, including standard and available mesoscale sectors. Exact products and satellite-to-sector availability can change without an app update.
Who supplies the imagery?
GOES source imagery is NOAA/NESDIS data. Himawari imagery originates with the Japan Meteorological Agency and is distributed through JAXA P-Tree. Mammatus Weather processes, catalogs, and delivers the map tiles.
Why do frames load newest first?
The newest completed image is shown as soon as possible. Older frames then prepare backward through time, similar to model loading. The READY counter shows how many requested frames are available for smooth playback.
Why are transparent or empty areas visible?
Regional and mesoscale sectors do not cover the whole world, and mesoscale sectors move. Areas outside a sector can be transparent. A truly missing tile or frame is skipped rather than intentionally displayed as a blank image.
How much satellite imagery is included?
Free includes five frames of standard GOES East and GOES West imagery. Pro provides up to 100 frames and adds mesoscale sectors, Himawari imagery, and satellite backgrounds beneath other maps.
Why can mesoscale imagery still look soft?
A mesoscale sector updates more frequently, but cadence is not the same as pixel resolution. Detail also depends on the product’s source resolution, tile zoom range, current map zoom, display scaling, and whether tiles are fully ready.
What does the lightning layer show?
GLM lightning uses normalized recent flashes derived from GOES-East and GOES-West source observations. Lightning overlays are available with Free and Pro. Pro storm-track icons are drawn above the layer for visibility when enabled.
Why can satellite animation pause or jump?
The loop uses ready frames and skips unavailable timestamps. Starting before enough frames are prepared, moving the map, or loading a large loop can make early playback less even. Let the READY counter advance before replaying.
Guidance and models
What is included on the Outlooks page?
Official severe, rainfall, winter, fire, climate, and drought guidance, along with active SPC Mesoscale Discussions and WPC Mesoscale Precipitation Discussions where available.
What is the difference between an outlook and a warning?
An outlook highlights an area and time period where hazards may develop. A warning is a more urgent official product for an active or imminent hazard. Read the product title, valid time, and issuer.
What does the Tropics page provide?
Tropical development areas, active storms, official tracks and cones, model guidance, overlays, aircraft reconnaissance, briefings, and still-image sharing. Satellite imagery itself stays on the Radar map workflow.
Why do some overlays appear above satellite imagery?
Boundaries, city labels, temperatures, warnings, tracks, and selected guidance are ordered to remain readable. Less urgent filled polygons may be placed below satellite imagery or shown as outlines to avoid obscuring clouds.
Which forecast models are available?
The primary Models page supports HRRR, RRFS, GFS, HAFS-A, and HAFS-B products. HAFS provides Storm and Parent domains. Availability depends on the latest completed run and field.
What model access is included with Free?
Free includes WRF and NDFD forecasts plus HRRR Composite Reflectivity. Pro adds advanced HRRR fields, HRRR 15-minute products, RRFS, GFS, and HAFS. Still-image, GIF, and MP4 sharing are available with both plans.
Why does a model show fewer frames than expected?
The newest run can be published progressively. Frames load latest-first, and the readiness bar reflects what is actually available. A displayed total is a loading target, not proof that every upstream forecast hour has arrived.
How should I interpret model output?
Use trends and agreement across runs and models, not a single frame as a promise. Resolution, initialization, forecast hour, and storm-scale uncertainty all affect the result.
Playback, sharing, and Pro
Where do I change animation speed and loop length?
Open Settings and choose Radar Playback or Satellite Playback. Model playback has its own control. Changing one data type does not change the others.
How do I scrub the satellite timeline?
Drag the timeline slider to a requested frame. Scrubbing pauses playback, and releasing commits the selected ready frame. If a frame is still preparing, the app keeps a usable image while loading catches up.
What can I export?
Supported map workflows can share a still image, animated GIF, or MP4 video. The export includes the chosen data layer and visible contextual overlays, plus a presentation footer where applicable.
Which export format should I choose?
Use a still image for the crispest single moment, GIF for broad compatibility, and MP4 for smoother motion and typically smaller files. Very long animations take more time and storage in every format.
Does faster export reduce weather data or resolution?
An optimized export can reuse prepared map frames and encode more efficiently without intentionally dropping requested weather frames. Final visual resolution is determined by the export capture size and format, not the animation’s server cadence.
What is included with Mammatus Weather Pro?
Pro removes advertising and adds longer radar loops, selectable Level II elevations, up to 100 standard satellite frames, mesoscale and Himawari imagery, satellite map backgrounds, advanced forecast models, dual and quad layouts, storm tracks, 3D radar, custom color tables, and SPC Outlook and Tropical Tracker widgets.
Does Pro include the Free features?
Yes. Pro includes all Free weather, outlook, tropical, standard radar, observation, map, and app-service features.
How do I restore a purchase?
Open the Pro screen and choose Restore Purchases. Purchases are tied to the Apple Account used for the subscription. Plan management and cancellation remain in App Store account settings.
Troubleshooting and support
Satellite says “Loading Products.” What should I do?
Check connectivity, wait briefly, and retry. A timeout from the product catalog can occur even when previously loaded imagery remains usable. The app should retain the last successful frame rather than remove it solely because refresh failed.
Where can I check service health?
Open Settings → Diagnostics & Logs → Mammatus Service Status, or visit the Mammatus Weather status page. It covers Mammatus-hosted website, satellite, and lightning services.
How do I collect useful diagnostics?
Open Settings → Diagnostics & Logs. Refresh the report, then copy or share it. The report includes radar timing, products, cache activity, and network errors, but does not include location or personal information.
What does a network timeout mean?
It means a request did not complete before its time limit. Retry after confirming connectivity and service status. Repeated timeouts can be upstream or route-specific even when other parts of the app work.
Why are labels or borders less detailed when zoomed out?
Map styles simplify geometry and labels at low zoom to keep the display legible and responsive. Zoom in for local boundaries and detail. Weather overlays should remain clipped to their real coverage.
What should I do before exporting a long loop?
Keep the viewport steady, wait for the READY counter, confirm the timeline plays correctly, and leave enough device storage. Longer loops take more time and storage than short loops.
Where can I review source attribution?
The app shows product attribution where required. The Mammatus Weather Data Sources page lists current upstream owners and providers.
What if displayed weather conflicts with an official instruction?
Follow the official warning or local emergency instruction. Weather data can be delayed, incomplete, or interpreted differently; life-safety decisions should never depend on a single app display.
