Weather data & safety

Context matters
in every storm.

Weather technology is a powerful tool, but no app can replace official warnings, local authorities, or good judgment.

During severe weather: Follow official warnings and emergency instructions from local authorities. Do not rely on Mammatus Weather as your only source of safety information.

How to use the information

Mammatus Weather displays information derived from government and third-party weather sources. Data can be delayed, incomplete, unavailable, or inaccurate because of source outages, communications issues, processing time, and the physical limits of remote sensing.

Automated storm tracks

Storm-cell identification, tracks, arrival markers, probabilities, and related analysis are generated algorithmically. A detected storm, hail probability, or rotation signature is not confirmation that a surface event is occurring. Automated detections can miss real hazards or identify features that are not hazardous.

Radar limitations

Weather radar samples the atmosphere above the ground. Beam height and width increase with distance, terrain can block the beam, and some precipitation or hazards may not be visible. Radar velocity represents motion relative to a radar rather than the complete wind field.

Lightning safety

Lightning data may be delayed and may not include every strike. An absence of displayed lightning does not mean an area is safe. When thunder roars, go indoors, and follow guidance from official safety agencies.

Data sources and attribution

Radar products and mosaics are provided by NOAA and the National Weather Service, with super-resolution products obtained through Unidata’s public NEXRAD Level III AWS mirror. Forecasts, conditions, observations, and many alerts come from the National Weather Service. Radar warning polygons may also be delivered through the College of DuPage GRLevelX-compatible feed. Tropical information comes from NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, and lightning observations originate from NOAA GOES-East and GOES-West GLM data processed by Mammatus Weather.

Dark and light maps use OpenFreeMap with OpenStreetMap data. Satellite imagery uses Esri World Imagery with OpenFreeMap reference information. City and ZIP-code searches use Apple MapKit. Data remains subject to the providers’ terms, availability, and required attribution.
