Overview

Mammatus Weather is designed to provide weather information while limiting collection of personal information. This policy explains how information is handled by the app and website.

App location information

If you grant location access, Mammatus Weather uses precise latitude and longitude to select nearby radar sites and show relevant forecasts, conditions, and warnings. The app requests location only while in use through one-time requests; it does not request background or “Always” access. Location is sent directly to the National Weather Service when needed for forecasts and alerts. Apple may process location or search information through Core Location and MapKit. The Mammatus Weather app does not send device location to its own servers.

Website location, search, and preferences

The website asks for your browser’s permission before using your location. You can use city or ZIP-code search instead. Your selected location, temperature unit, and up to four recent locations are saved in your browser’s local storage on this device. You can remove these saved preferences by clearing the site’s browser storage.

Selected coordinates are sent to our weather service and directly to the National Weather Service to request local conditions, forecasts, and alerts. Weather requests and their coordinates may be held temporarily in server-memory caches; they are not added to a personal-location database. City-name searches use Open-Meteo’s geocoding service and ZIP-code searches use Zippopotam.us through our weather service. Interactive maps request basemap tiles and labels from OpenFreeMap/OpenStreetMap for the area you view. These requests necessarily include a requesting IP address, and hosting, security, weather, and map providers may retain ordinary request logs under their own practices.

Diagnostics and analytics

Internal diagnostic logs stay on the device unless the user deliberately copies or shares them. Apple may provide diagnostics under the user’s device settings and Apple’s policies.

Mammatus Weather uses Sentry for crash reporting, error monitoring, debugging, and app performance monitoring. Sentry may receive technical diagnostic information such as crash reports, errors, stack traces, app and device information, operating-system information, performance measurements, and other technical information needed to identify bugs, crashes, and performance problems. We do not use Sentry for advertising or cross-app tracking. We do not intentionally send personal content, precise location, names, or email addresses to Sentry.

Google AdMob may collect diagnostic and performance information as described below. This website uses first-party, cookie-free analytics to count page views, active visitors, daily visitors, popular pages, and referring websites. It does not store raw IP addresses; an IP address and browser user-agent are converted into a one-way, day-specific identifier used only to avoid counting the same visitor repeatedly that day. Daily identifiers are deleted after 90 days, and requests with the browser’s Do Not Track setting enabled are excluded.

Advertising

The app uses Google AdMob to display advertisements. The Google Mobile Ads SDK may collect and process information such as the device’s IP address, approximate location derived from the IP address, device or advertising identifiers, ad impressions and interactions, app interactions, and diagnostic and performance data. Google and its advertising partners may use this information to provide, measure, personalize, and improve advertising, subject to the user’s consent, device settings, and applicable law. Mammatus Weather does not provide precise device location to Google for advertising. For more information, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services and Google’s Privacy Policy.

Website advertising

The website includes Google AdSense code. Where advertisements are served, Google and other advertising vendors may use cookies or similar technologies, web beacons, and IP addresses to deliver and measure ads, including personalized ads based on visits to this website or other websites. This is separate from our cookie-free, first-party page-view analytics. We do not intentionally provide your selected forecast coordinates to Google for ad targeting.

You can manage Google ad personalization through Google Ads Settings and find choices for participating advertising vendors at YourAdChoices. You can also manage cookies through your browser. See Google’s explanation of partner-site data use and Google’s Privacy Policy for more information.

Subscriptions and purchases

Purchases and subscriptions are processed by Apple. Mammatus Weather uses RevenueCat to manage and validate in-app purchases and subscriptions, provide access to purchased features, restore purchases, and understand purchase and subscription activity. RevenueCat may receive purchase history, entitlement status, subscription status, product identifiers, transaction information, and related technical identifiers needed to provide these services. RevenueCat may also recognize and restore purchases made through Apple before RevenueCat was added to the app by using Apple’s purchase and receipt system.

RevenueCat is used for app functionality and subscription and purchase analytics. We do not use RevenueCat data for advertising or cross-app tracking. RevenueCat users are treated as anonymous by Mammatus Weather; we do not intentionally provide RevenueCat with a user’s name or email address. Mammatus Weather does not receive complete payment-card details from Apple.

Email addresses

Mammatus Weather may optionally ask you to provide an email address. Providing an email address is not required to use the app unless a specific feature clearly requires it. If you provide an email address, it may be used for the functionality for which you supplied it, such as support or account-related functionality. We do not use email addresses for advertising or cross-app tracking.

Cloud-synced settings and accounts

The app has no general user-account system. Optional iCloud Sync uses a private iCloud Drive document to synchronize the home location, units, tracked airports and radar stations, radar preferences, alert filters, tropical and environmental settings, and supported imported color-table data. Turning sync off stops future synchronization but does not delete the iCloud document or local cached copy. The current complete multi-table color library may not fully synchronize. Privacy or deletion questions may be sent to [email protected].

Weather and map requests

The app sends selected coordinates to the National Weather Service for forecasts and alerts. Map requests are made to OpenFreeMap and Esri for the displayed area, and Apple MapKit handles city and ZIP-code search. Lightning requests go to glm.zasnetwx.com using a selected radar-area bounding box rather than device location. The service necessarily receives the requesting IP address and radar-area bounds while handling the request, but Mammatus Weather does not log or retain that information.

Third-party services and processors

Mammatus Weather relies on third parties to provide parts of the app and website. These include Apple for app distribution, purchases, subscriptions, device services, and iCloud; RevenueCat for purchase and subscription management and analytics; Sentry for crash reporting, error monitoring, debugging, and performance monitoring; Google AdMob for advertising; and the weather and mapping providers described above. These providers process information under their own terms and privacy practices. Learn more in RevenueCat’s Privacy Policy and Sentry’s Privacy Policy.

Retention and security

Home location and preferences are stored locally and, when enabled, in the user’s private iCloud Drive. Mammatus Weather does not retain location in its own database. Support emails remain in the support mailbox until manually deleted or removed under the email provider’s retention practices. External providers may retain ordinary request logs and other information described in this policy under their own retention practices. Reasonable safeguards are used, but no transmission or storage method is completely secure.

Children’s privacy

Mammatus Weather is intended for a general audience and is not specifically directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your choices

You can control location access in iOS Settings, manage subscriptions through Apple, choose whether to provide an optional email address, and contact support with privacy questions or applicable data requests.

This policy may be updated as Mammatus Weather changes. The revised date will be posted on this page.
